To successfully open, close, lock and unlock the Shedd's double doors, you'll want to either get an engineering degree or scroll through these pictures and read the caption below each one...

The front and back double doors are handsome, but a challenge to operate. Each set has both an "active" and "passive" side.  The active door is the only one you will need to use unless you are opening both doors (highly recommended from late April to early October).  The active door is the one with a door mat.

To close the passive door, lift up on the handle.  This attaches the door securely to the door frame at the top and bottom.

To lock the passive door, turn the knob below the handle counterclockwise.

When you close the active door, don't be afraid to give it a good swing so that it latches to the passive door.  Then lift up the handle to attach it securely to the door frame at the top and bottom

Finally, to lock the active door, turn the knob below the handle clockwise.

This is the way the handles and knobs should look when you have successfully locked yourself in.
