If you are inclined to start a fire, the wood, paper-based combustibles, fire starters, and a lighter are in the box to the left.  Here are some tips on how to use them...

Put cardboard on the bottom, and crumpled paper on top of that. Leave a couple of spaces open for the fire starters.

Light the edges of two firestarters.

Set the firestarters on the cardboard, rounded-side down.

Stack the wood in such a way that the firestarters have room to breathe.  Put as much wood in the stove as you can.

Close the door, leaving a bit of a gap so that air can fuel the flame.

Open the air vent completely by pushing in on the handle under the stove. Later, when the fire is going well, this handle can be used to slow the fire down (pull the handle out) or speed it up (push the handle in).

After a while, when the fire seems established, close the door and latch it by turning the handle counterclockwise and down.

Now that the fire is good and hot, you can open the door and put the screen on if you'd like.  When taking it on and off, use the hot mitt.  If you need to leave the Shedd or go to bed, please take the screen off, close and latch the door, and pull the vent handle out to slow the fire down.
